"good morning maryland" i'm charlie crowson. >> and i'm megan pringle. thank you for joining us. maybe you have the day off yesterday and got excited to see something falling from the sky. but it turned out to be not so pretty. >> it was nasty. mike it was nasty. out there. you were here until almost 5:00 last night. >> it was like it wouldn't end and it wouldn't turn over to rain. i mean just an interesting storm and we had a lot of sleet to the north. but the good news is today a drier day and a windy day though. temperatures this morning 41 in the stay and 37 at the airport and annapolis at 38. it's pretty cool most of the readings near the freezing mark. well to the north and to the west. notice the winds pretty busy now out of the northerly direction between 10 to 15. if that reason we have a high wind advisory through the course the day. so while it's a cloudy sky we're at 36 to 37 around the lunchtime here. we're near flirt with 40 for most of the day today but again the windchill factors feeling like it's into the 20s. there's the first

. megan mcgrath is at the ellipse with a preview of the big ceremony. >> you can see the tree over my shoulder here. it's all decorateding the lights are on, but of course it hasn't been lit yet. they won't be doing that until shortly after 5:00 tonight. this is the 90th annual lighting of the christmas tree, a tradition that was started in 1903. the video that you're seeing here, this was actually from last year's tree lighting. this year, though, folks can expect a few different things. we've got a couple changes here. first of all, the stage has been changed and the location of the stage has been changed as well. they basically shifted it 90 degrees. so you've got this really pretty backdrop now. you've got the tree immediately to the left of the stage and then to the left of that, you have the white house itself, which of course during the time of the big event tonight will be all lit up. so very beautiful backdrop here. also, the host this year is actor neil patrick harris. and we've got a star-studded lineup. what can we expect in terms of musical performances? take a listen. >>

christmas tree. this year's event included several star-studded acts. megan now with a preview of the big event. >> reporter: this is the 90th annual lighting of the christmas tree. this started in 1923 with calvin coolidge and that tradition continuing today, with lots of things that are new this year. you see the stage brand-new. the orientation of the stage is new as well. it's got kind of an interesting perspective. you see the tree to the left of the stage, and then you also see the white house. they switched things up a little bit. we also have a new tree this year. i'm joined by scott tucker with the national park service. talk about the tree itself. because that's the highlight of this event. what happened? we have a new tree. >> we do have a new tree. back in president's day weekend of 2011, the wind storm came through d.c. and snapped the tree that was planted in 1978. we transplanted a new tree because the national christmas tree is a live, living tree. we transplanted in one in march of 2011. that one didn't make it. and so this year, roughly a month ago, october of this year,

it will be slowing -- slow going on metro. megan's law impact pretty much every line. red line is taking a pretty hard hit this weekend. >> absolutely. five stations along the red line are shutting down, including this one in weekend. if you are taking metro on any line, you'll want to plan some extra time into your trip. the other lines the other stations that will be closed starting at 10:00 tonight will be takoma, sulphur springs, and glenmont. red line trains will operate between shady grove every 10 minutes between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. throughout the weekend. travelers should allow between 50 and 60 minutes of additional travel time. every line this weekend will be affected by this mean it's work that will happen. there are a number of different things they are working on. along the yellow line, there'll be no service between fort totten. bridge work over the takoma river. yellow lines will operate on the blue lines. metro is recommended for people planning on getting on the trains this weekend to add anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes to your trip. all this information is on our web site
